Blu-ray Encoding
Encoding for Blu-ray Disc authoring offers many more codec choices over standard DVD in both video and audio options. Blu-ray Disc Authoring has three options for video formats: MPEG2, AVC/H.264, and VC-1. MPEG-2 is the oldest and most limited codec in terms of bitrate and quality. Many early Blu-ray Discs used this format, but it is currently found rarely on commercially-made titles. Its main advantage is that although it is generally of lower quality, it can be encoded must faster and consequently for a lower price than the other two formats.
AVC/H.264 and VC-1 are both excellent codecs that movie studios use for their high-end products. Some studios use one over the other, but the difference is mainly for the geeks like us. Under some conditions one might handle grain differently than the other, or might smooth an image better than the other in low bitrate, but most viewers will not see a difference. Both are great choices for Blu-ray Authoring.
DKP can encode your video in any of these three codecs and is happy to do some experimentation to see which produces the finest picture quality.
Blu-ray Authoring has several new options for audio encoding as well. In addition to the formats from DVD, PCM, Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1, etc., there is Dolby TrueHD 7.1, DTS-HD 7.1, Uncompressed 7.1.
